Marika first began painting 13 years ago after making a rapid and fateful decision to leave her job in the corporate world and become an artist – a decision that bore fruit almost immediately when, as a first year Elam student, her first exhibition was a sell out.

Marika’s new series of bird paintings came to life during her time in the South Island this past year.

The birds in this latest body of work have been to use as a continuation of her investigation into the spiritual.

Reading these paintings in a spiritual context makes further sense when you consider the chemical reactions that are part of the making process. Like alchemy, the medieval forerunner of chemistry in which base metals were transmuted into gold or silver, a chemical transformation has quite literally occurred in Marika’s paintings. Silver and gold leaf is used to embrace spiritual values, associating precious metals with wisdom and light.

For Marika, painting is a daily practice or meditation, a reaffirmation of faith in a benevolent organising principle greater than we are “It’s a way of connecting,” she says.
