Cathy Torvik’s ART Biography

Cathy Torvik has been a Whangarei resident with her family for 22 years, and was raised and educated in California....
Ever since she was a pre-schooler , she has enjoyed making marks on surfaces and decorated her mothers new wall paper in the family dining room with crayons when she was 4 years old !

After high school, she majored in art, and attended art courses in painting, ceramics, sketching and art appreciation in her home town, Santa Barbara.

Over the years she has enjoyed discovering her particular style, by attending classes and workshops in drawing and painting in California and New Zealand, with Robert Frame, Pat Brant-Ericksen, Buck Paulson, Bill Parkes, Aroha, Ann Luiten, James Lawrence , Bevan Fidler, John Lovett, Carole Prentice, Sheryl O’Gorman, Trisha Culina, and the help & encouragement of other family and Friends..

Anticipating her 60th birthday, her husband Paul said “ why don’t you go to Italy and paint, as you have been wanting to for years.” so, she found a tour with John Lovett tutoring in watercolour techniques in plein air. Thirty-three painters from around the world met and spent 12 days painting together, 6 days in CinqueTerre Region and 6 days in Tuscany; Massa Maritima, San Gimignano , and Sienna.
I hope you enjoy my travelogue-style exhibition of water colours, and acrylic paintings ...

“ I do enjoy expressionistic–style brush work, and visual shapes and colours playing with each other.” “ I want to convey by my sometimes random, quirky perspectives , that it is good to exercize and practice seeing things in life from another persons viewpoint... or way of seeing.”
