Decorative Arts and Design Internship
The Inaugural Blumhardt Foundation/Creative New Zealand
Curatorial Internship
Applications are invited for the inaugural curatorial internship, a partnership between The Blumhardt Foundation, Creative New Zealand and The Dowse.
The intern will work with Dowse staff in researching and developing the opening exhibition for the Blumhardt Gallery in The ‘New’ Dowse, which is due to open in mid 2006.
The position has been developed to nurture curatorial interest and expertise in the areas of decorative arts and design and will be based at The Dowse in Lower Hutt. The intern will work closely with Dowse curatorial staff and The Blumhardt Foundation. Some training will be provided.
Applications close 20 November 2004. The contract will commence in January 2005.

A partnership between The Blumhardt Foundation, Creative New Zealand and The Dowse
The inaugural Blumhardt Foundation / Creative New Zealand curatorial intern will work with Dowse staff in researching and developing the opening exhibition for the Blumhardt Gallery in The ‘New’ Dowse, which is due to open mid-2006.
BACKGROUND
The Blumhardt Gallery, a 300 m2 purpose-designed space, will be New Zealand’s premier showcase for the decorative arts and design.
The Blumhardt Gallery is a partnership with the Blumhardt Foundation, founded by noted ceramicist and educator, Doreen Blumhardt, and The Dowse.

CURATORIAL INTERNSHIP POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Blumhardt Foundation / Creative New Zealand Curatorial Internship is a fixed-term contract.
The successful applicant will play a leading role in the research and conceptual development of the Blumhardt Gallery’s inaugural exhibition project, due to open in mid-2006.
Areas of delegated research will be determined by the applicant’s strengths and complementary skills within The Dowse team.
The position has been developed in order to nurture curatorial interest and expertise in the areas of decorative arts and design. As such, the internship will be based at The Dowse and will work closely with Dowse curatorial staff. Training, e.g. in oral history, will be provided.
The contract will commence in January 2005.
SKILLS REQUIRED
The ideal applicant will have:
research and interviewing skills
interest and experience in the decorative arts and design (tertiary qualification or equivalent experience in art history, design, museum studies or other relevant area)
good verbal and written communication skills§ the ability to work as part of a creative team
published in the field
the ability to balance the big picture while paying attention to detail
a current NZ drivers’ licence.
REMUNERATION
$15,000 is available for the internship and will include a stipend, travel and any other costs. This will be negotiated with the successful applicant.
ACCOUNTABLILITY
The Blumhardt Foundation will managed the internship. Project leadership will be shared by a Blumhardt Foundation Trustee and The Dowse Programme Developer.
