Selected by the Arts Foundation of New Zealand Governors, this Award recognises an individual or institution that has contributed in a significant way to the development of the arts and artists in New Zealand. The 2004 Governors Award is only the second to be awarded in the five years the Foundation has been in existence and this year is given to Concert FM.
From its beginnings as the YC stations in the 50's, Concert FM has concentrated on providing high quality material in the audio arts, and specialist programmes that are not presented on other broadcasting outlets. The Arts Foundation of New Zealand and the Governors recognised the significant contribution that Concert FM has made to this country in supporting, encouraging and promoting New Zealand composers, musicians, writers and actors at a national level.
"Concert FM is a national treasure." said Arts Foundation Governor, Lloyd Williams "Their commitment to producing quality programmes that feature New Zealand music is a vital contribution to the celebration and archiving of our cultural identity"
The Arts Foundation also acknowledges Concert FM's contribution to the arts through its recording collaborations and the Douglas Lilburn Prize.
Radio New Zealand Chief Executive, Peter Cavanagh, emphasised the importance of the award for Concert FM "Concert FM plays a significant part in the cultural life of this country and we are thrilled that the network has been honoured by the Arts Foundation. This award recognises our commitment to New Zealand music and reflects increasing public recognition apparent in the significant audience growth the network has experienced over the past twelve months. Quality music is alive and well on Concert FM."
"The Arts are an important part of New Zealand society" added Concert FM Group Music Manager Miles Rogers "and we greatly admire the work that the Arts Foundation is doing to support, encourage and honour those involved."
This is a honourary award and this year was presented in conjunction with the fifth annual Laureate Awards. Concert FM received a medallion designed by artist Richard Wheeler and joins the inaugural 2002 recipient, the University of Otago.
The Arts Foundation of New Zealand is a charitable Trust, independent from Government that invests in excellence in New Zealand Arts through the Icon, Laureate and Governors Award programmes. With the support of Principal Sponsor Forsyth Barr, the Foundation has a long-term goal of raising $100 million to be held in an endowment fund, with all income generated used to support the arts. The Foundation encourages private individuals to support this goal through donations and bequests.
