News - Great POTential
Monday 15 November 2004

Northland’s version of the Auckland Studio Potters Association – the Northland Potter’s Group – has been up and running for a few months now, meeting at the Northland Craft Trust Quarry (Selwyn Ave) every second Wednesday evening.
Among the 15 financial members ($20 per year plus $4 a session) exists a range of skills from enthusiastic beginners to experienced potters and new members are welcome.
The sessions are not classes as such, more meetings of like-minded practitioners who mentor one another. Should the demand arise however, separate tutoring sessions can be arranged for real beginners, as part of the sessions.
Members made hand-built ceramic sculptures and pots, and pottery wheels are available for those who prefer wheel-thrown work. Works can be fired in The Quarry’s legendary wood-fired gas kiln affectionately known as Julie-Ann, and stock is currently being built up to be fired during the Quarry Summer Do to be held January 9 to 15.
Fund-raising is underway to purchase an electric kiln so larger hand-built works can be bisque fired.
Northland Regional Council member for the New Zealand Society of Potters and Potters Group member Sue Forward said “It’s about fighting our way back into the public eye in the face of a flood of cheap imported pots”.
Anyone wishing to joint the group can contact the Northland Craft Trust on 09 438 1215 or Linda Marina on 09 434 7324.
