Kamo Intermediate students have transformed a plain wall at Whangarei Hospital into a work of art.
Two vibrant scenes of beach and bush now greet visitors to the hospital, a far cry from when the entrance was a nondescript white. The bush scene also contains a non-smoking sign, a reminder that the hospital and grounds are now smoke-free.
Artist in residence at Kamo Intermediate, Hayley Clark, designed the mural and around 20 children helped paint it over four days. The project was part of the schools intensive art programme, where students participate in a range of activities throughout the community, and it was made possible thanks to Guthrie Bowron, which donated the paint, and Macsway Scaffolding in Ruakaka which loaned scaffolding.
The hospital’s volunteer co-ordinator customer services, Rose Barrington says the hospital is overjoyed with the work. “ I think it’s excellent and comments are amazing, everyone comes up and says ‘wow’!” she said. “It’s just beautiful”.
Customer services manager Agnes Hermans says they’d like to see more artwork adorning hospital walls.
“The hospital welcomes these types of initiatives and we’d love more murals, we have a lot of plain walls here,” she said. “We’d like to thank Hayley for being so mindful of the hospital and helping to brighten it up”.
