News - Boosting Funds
Thursday 18 November 2004

Northland artists helped raise about $48,000 for the National Collective of Independent Women’s Refuges at the 2004 Yellow Pages Arts Charity Auction last Thursday. A selection of seven artworks from the 2004 Northland Yellow Pages Arts Scholarship entries were among the 100 to go under the hammer.
The top price for a Northland work – and the third highest paid for any artwork – was $1320 for Evening Ride by Richard Robinson of Ruakaka.
The other Northland works in the auction were: Waipu Cove, Lagoon End by Susan Edge (2004 Northland Yellow Pages Art Scholarship inner); Farm Life by David van Diepen; Beach Walk with Poppa by Shelley Williamson; Daydreamer, and Cruising Home by Asha Munn. Other works were sold through online tender.
The Women’s Refuge will use the funds to help develop and resource special rooms for children in refuges (over 10,000 children pass through New Zealand’s 50 safe houses every year). Called Star Rooms, these are creative spaces where children can work with trained children’s advocates, often on arts-related activities.
Last years the auction raised over $40,000 for Hospice New Zealand and in 2002, $30,000 for the Starship Foundation.
