Forget opening night jitters or “great performance, pity about the lack of polish” excuses - the cast and crew at Whangarei Theatre Company have come in all cylinders for this production.
Set on a cruise liner, after the sisters are given a free trip on the “Faiths of All Nations” cruise, the five nuns (plus one male actor, playing Tevye) take to the stage when all the ship’s entertainers fall ill.
What follows is a witty, hilarious and very musical load of ‘nunsense’ set into he dining quarter of the ship and, appropriately, in the theatre’s own dining area, which is also the stage for this production.
The actors gelled from the start and timed the well- written jokes perfectly. Maria Satterfield, playing Sister Mary- Paul - Amnesia was outstanding and provided some magic moments. Penny Mashlan (Sister Mary Hubert) was cataclysmically funny. Brain Satterfield (Howard Liszi) and Debi Ujdur (Sister Robert Ann) were the anchors of the performance while Gayle Dowsetti’a (the Reverend Mother) voice was unbelievable. Oh, and I mustn’t forget Robyn Little (postulant) who spoke volumes by her silent expressions.
A great show, great cast and a great night out.
