Overview

Arts Promotion Trust (Northland) is excited to be calling for applications from creative sector practitioners and business owners for an intensive “high-end” 12-week professional development programme.

Applications are sought, across all art forms and creative sector business and practise including arts practitioners, entrepreneurs and creative sector employees.

Applicants will be assessed on their potential for excellence, both in a technical sense and with regard to their motivation and desire to succeed.  Assessments will be carried out by experts in their field and by a qualified life coach.

The programme is unique within Aotearoa and comprises a 3-pronged approach:

·         Developing exceptional technical skills in their particular art form.  Specialist tutors and mentors will be sourced to deliver this component of the programme.

·         Mary Britton, a qualified life coach, highly experienced in working with creative individuals will provide weekly one-on-one coaching to assist participants develop the skills, mindsets and work practise conducive to success.

·         The business planning and skills component will be delivered by Karen q Temple, Chief Executive of the Arts Promotion Trust.  Karen is a qualified accountant with broad business experience both in and out of the creative sector.  She also has significant experience mentoring creative sector practitioners.

Parts of the programme will be delivered in groups, and parts will be delivered one-on-one.  This provides the opportunity to both highly individualise the programme as well as to take advantage of the networking, support and collaboration opportunities that arise from working in a group.

The programme is in a similar vein to “Crossing the Gap” – a highly successful professional development programme run by Arts Promotion Trust in 2006 which effectively developed artists like Theresa Reihana and Anahera Kingi.

"Crossing the Gap identified specific goals that were required for self-sustainability.  We identified these goals for ourselves with the help of the programme.  As a Maori woman with six children, living in rural northland what I wanted was to make my living from my painting.  Through understanding where the gaps in my business practice were and where the potential networks for making sales and my own options for developing other sales options (such as print production and calendar making) I have developed a sustainable practise.  All the artists (on the programme) were from different backgrounds and made different sorts of work and we all benefited from the programme."  Theresa Reihana

"I have a transformed relationship with money!  I used to think that money was somehow "wrong" and that other people had it. I gave my work away at times and I sold it for less than it was worth.  I may still have my moments but I am very clear about how money can support me in getting what I need and living my life the way I choose to."  Anahera Kingi

The programme will be run from September to December 2008 and will be available for 9 participants.
